Top 15 Most Impressive Celebrity Body Transformations

It’s not easy to transform your body, especially when what you are starting off with is far away from your intended goal. Celebrities make it look easy, however, with their constant yo-yoing weights and changing physiques! For them, it’s as simple as hiring a personal trainer and someone to put together a diet plan. Plus, with all that free time on their hands, a lot of celebrities can work on their bodies in peace, without needing to check in to a day job.

Still, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have to put in a lot of hard work. Actually, it’s still a huge challenge to transform your body in any meaningful way – something that all of the celebrities on this list have achieved. Whether they are an actor beefing up for a role, a singer slimming down to an unrecognisable shape, or just a celebrity who decides to transform their image, all of these celebrities shocked us hugely when they came out with their new bodies.

Take a moment to appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears that went into these body transformations – most of which are definitely not recommended to be tried at home. In fact, some of these celebrities have even gone on record as saying that their methods were unhealthy and dangerous. That’s why we are all the more impressed that they not only managed it, but also did so in tight time constraints and with the eyes of the world on them. Feast your eyes on these amazing transformations.

1. Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson made headlines a while back when she famously managed to shift a grand total of over four stone with Weight Watchers. Not only was this a very big publicity boost for weight loss club, but it also allowed her to showcase a brand new body with pride. The once-large singer even took to the beach in a skimpy bikini to share some snaps with fans – but not until four years after her impressive transformation first took place. She went from a size 16 down to a 6, and reportedly later to a 0, before stepping down as an ambassador for the brand.

2. Christian Bale

Christian Bale is already hugely respected as one of the actors in Hollywood who can seriously push his body to breaking point. He slimmed down to a starving four stone – dangerously close to the kind of anorexic weight that would cause his organs to begin shutting down – for his role in The Machinist. As if this wasn’t enough, he then had to bulk up immediately afterwards in order to play Batman. His weight has been up and down so many times that it’s hard to understand how he manages it – his self-control is at an extreme level that most of us simply couldn’t handle.

3. Nick Jonas

Nick Jonas was part of the musical world’s purest boyband, the obviously named Jonas Brothers, so it’s a bit of a surprise to see him all grown up and beefed up too. He took on the change while preparing for a role in Kingdom, a television show in which he plays a prize fighter. “I did a lot of strength training, so just building muscle,” he said. “On top of that fight training as well, I learned how to fight.” He ended up putting on a full stone just of muscle, and his transformation from nerdy to buff is pretty impressive.

4. Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne spent some of her formative years splashed across our screens on her family’s reality TV show, The Osbournes. It’s no surprise, then, that she became self-conscious about her appearance – especially as her and brother Jack’s weight spiralled out of control. Though they both eventually underwent transformations, she was the first to take the reins, shedding almost four stone. The difference was huge, and Kelly even enjoyed some renewed success in the music charts directly after launching her new look. She was praised as an example of a healthy physique and became a style icon as a result, too.

5. Zach Galifianakis

As can be expected, Zach Galifianakis made light of his extreme weight loss after a year away from the spotlight. Stepping onto the red carpet in 2014, he was noticeably three and a half stone lighter – an incredible transformation from the Hangover star. “I stopped drinking and I just kind of put the weight off,” he said. “I was having a lot of vodka with sausage. Delicious but bad for you.” This dramatic change was made even more apparent by his retention of his straggly hair and beard, part of his signature look – which once included an overweight physique to play even more on the laughs.

6. Ray Quinn

This star may be little-known outside of the UK, but his transformation is one that rocked the nation’s press. Known first for participating in a season of The X Factor – in which he scooped third place – he has since shown up on a variety of talent shows in-between stints on the stage. His turn on Dancing On Ice showed a young man who had matured and built up muscle, but he then lost it all when he stopped training. In 2015, divorce prompted him to focus on his body, and he appeared on Loose Women towards the end of the year with a new seriously pumped physique after working out five days a week.

7. Perez Hilton

Perez Hilton was known as a gossip queen, but his chubby looks left him open to easy ridicule fired back from the stars he mocked. Clearly he wanted more, and he shed the weight to unveil a new svelte figure which really does him a lot more justice. Now the newly-thin blogger is just about untouchable – and even if you could touch him, you would be touching less. He reportedly lost between 70 and 80 pounds before unveiling his new look in characteristic showy fashion: heading to an awards show with no shirt beneath his blazer, revealing his new abs.

8. Matthew McConaughey

“It was tough going, I’m not going to lie,” said McConaughey of his extreme weight loss. “The dieting was pretty hardcore. I was losing 7lb every week.” He lost three stone in only a few months in order to take up his role in Dallas Buyers Club, where he played an AIDs sufferer deep in the grip of the disease. Capturing this look was extremely difficult, leaving him short-tempered and ravenous at all times as he had to survive on as little food as possible. Most people would give in and feed themselves, but McConaughey was on a deadline to be ready for filming.

9. Renee Zellweger

Renee attracted a lot of unwanted attention lately for the transformation of her face, but it’s her body we want to focus on here. She’s perhaps best known for her role as Bridget Jones, in not one – or two – but now three films. The chubby Jones is a far cry from Zellweger’s normally svelte figure, so in order to pack on the pounds, she had to eat tubs of ice cream. She then managed to lose it all between each sequel, allowing her to maintain her slim image, only to have to pack it all back on before filming started.

10. Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal had a serious yo-yo recently, which is even more impressive considering his original transformation from gawky teenager to beefed-up man in roles like Jarhead. For Nighcrawler he dropped two stone, making his cheekbones almost painfully prominent for his creepy photographer role. Then he piled it back on and seriously beefed up for Southpaw. He packed on a stone of straight muscle by hitting the gym twice a day and eating a protein-based diet. He’s managed to return to his more normal figure since, abandoning the gruelling routine without going overboard and gaining a huge amount of weight.

11. Calvin Harris

DJ Calvin Harris once had a reputation as a bit of a geek. Spending most of his time on Twitter or remixing tracks in his bedroom, he would bemoan his singleton lifestyle. Then he moved to LA, started going to the gym regularly, and adopted a high protein, low carb diet – and starting dating Taylor Swift. Everyone was left gobsmacked when he appeared as the face – and body – of an Emporio Armani underwear campaign, marking a stark contrast to his previous image. He became the highest-earning musician of the year at around the same time thanks to his strong work ethic.

12. Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth has managed two particularly impressive transformations: bulking up to play the muscle-bound superhero Thor, then losing a lot of weight to play a shipwrecked sailor in In The Heart of the Sea. He attributes the huge muscle gain from his Home & Away days to a new kettle bell routine dreamt up by his personal trainer. As for the lean look? It was apparently achieved by restricting himself to just 500 calories per day, even during filming. He was quoted as saying, “I spend more time thinking about food than anything else.” We can’t blame him for that!

13. Jonah Hill

Loveable Jonah Hill got many of his laughs from being the fat and awkward youth, so it’s no surprise that his weight continued to balloon. Eventually, however, a more action-centric role beckoned: 21 Jump Street. In order to get the part, Hill had to promise to slim down and bulk up, so that audiences could accept him as an action hero and also see his stunts. He’s since been seen getting bigger again for another role, though he also opted for a fat suit so that he didn’t have to ruin all of his hard work just for one more movie.

14. Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has never been accused of being overweight, but she had to push her body right to the limit in preparation for her role in Black Swan. This ballet-centric movie required several months of hardcore training for Portman, who lost 20lbs after practising for eight hours a day and six days a week. Her trainer, Mary Helen Bowers, has since gone on to sell the gruelling Ballet Beautiful workout as a DVD series which will leave you exhausted even after a 15-minute session. Portman’s routine included swimming for a mile each morning, then 2 hours of ballet exercises along with cross-training and endurance exercises.

15. Chris Pratt

Chris Pratt was once nicknamed Fat Pratt, but the television star graduated to the big screen in real style by shedding his excess weight and converting it into muscle. He dropped an incredible six stone in 2014, grabbing GQ’s Man of the Year Award in the process. He focused on crossfit, intense hot yoga, the crazy P90X workouts, and a strict low carb paleo diet to make it happen. After wowing on screen in both Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy, you can expect to see a lot more of this leading man in the future – all thanks to his brand new physique.
